about

Not a true symphony in the traditional sense but more an elaborate working out of thematic material that made its presence know during a time starting around the late 1980s and early 1990s. But more in line with the Baroque notion of an invention (Thanks to an idea I stumbled upon in an exhaustive dissertation of the said musical form presented in perhaps too much detail in chapter one of Lawrence Dreyfus's fabulous book on 'Bach and the patterns of Invention').

The piece opens with three groups of thematic material that are then developed and interwoven throughout the remainder of the piece. The return of each of the themes is worked and re-worked constantly throughout the whole of the work becoming almost unrecognizable at points but always retaining some semblance of the original theme.

The work is conceived as a single uninterrupted movement punctuated with periodic climaxes and separated by long meditative orchestral sections. I always think of the image of a wheel rolling out of itself when writing these symphonic inventions and perhaps it is in that spirit that one might find a framework for listening to it. However, given its length I thought to break out a number of excerpts into smaller movements to highlight the various sections that emerge harmoniously from the thematic material as it is endlessly transformed and re-invented throughout the whole.

Many of the works I am now presenting on Band Camp were written during this early period of composing and I hope to render them faithfully given the modern tools we now have at our disposal to realize such things so vividly.
